The University of Louisville Center for Environmental Policy and Management website offers current projects that identify and provide information regarding environmentally and economically sustainable alternatives to uncontrolled and unfocused growth. Practice guides are included and are intended to provide urban and regional planners and policy makers with practical, useful tools. The presentations/outcomes section provides more extensive information regarding Smart Growth, brownfield redevelopment, and financing strategies.
The Center for Environmental Policy and Management has developed a practice guide, Developing New Uses for Low-to-No-Market Brownfields: The Affordable Housing Solution which serves as a tool for local government officials and affordable housing advocates and developers. It includes data that illustrate the need for affordable housing choices. Since a majority of brownfield sites are scattered within older urban neighborhoods, this guide approaches infill development as a viable location for residential units. Case studies are provided to illustrate how some affordable housing/brownfield developments were funded and how working partnerships between the public and private sectors are essential for their success. A listing of federal, state, and local funding sources is found in an appendix to this practice guide.
