SMARTe Development Status

Oveview

SMARTe has been under development since 2002. SMARTe integrates key elements of restoration including future land use, project participants, community involvement, preliminary environmental assessment, human and ecological risk management, economic analysis, sources of money, and liability. The initial development of SMARTe focused primarily on urban sites; however, future development will specifically address rural areas, mine-scarred land, methamphetamine sites, underground storage tank sites, Superfund sites, landfills, federal facilities, regional and local land revitalization planning, project management, and brownscape design.

SMARTe2007

SMARTe 2007 currently contains the following elements:

Everything listed above is ready to be used; however, users are expected to have read the conditions of use (using the site implies agreement with these conditions) and to provide feedback regarding the usefulness and usability of the information and tools so that the site can be continually enhanced.

SMARTe2008

SMARTe 2008 will be released in October 2007. It is anticipated that the following elements will be available in SMARTe 2008:

  1. Complete, integrated decision support capability – allowing users to walk through the entire revitalization process and evaluate different reuse options for a specific site.
  2. My Project capability – allowing users to build a revitalization plan from their evaluation.

Additional enhancements may include:

  1. Enhanced financial resources tool
  2. Enhance risk assessment tool
  3. Risk management tool to determine options for risk management including cleanup/removal
  4. Vapor intrusion calculator
  5. Incorporation of social and ecological costs and benefits into decision analysis
